Emotionally focused couples Therapy

By popular demand, Quality Counseling of New England LLC is excited to announce we are offering Couples Counseling.  We use the internationally recognized technique Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)? It is a therapy rooted in decades of research into the science of how people make connections with each other.  EFT therapists guide couples through stages that allow them to de-escalate their conflict and build new ways of connecting and supporting each other.  EFT helps people to process their emotions in a more restorative manner, repairing relationships and allowing people to feel more whole.

Our EFT therapist, April Lau, LMHC is a member of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy and has been trained in treating couples.  As your therapist, she’ll help you understand your relationship patterns, pointing out what works well, what keeps you stuck, and where small changes can get you moving in the right direction.  She won’t take either person’s side because she doesn’t think there’s a bad guy and a good guy.  You don’t have to wonder who April will agree with and if you’ll be called out for causing all your relationship problems.  You won’t be asked to change everything about you.  Instead, you’ll be suppported in nuturing your relationship with your partner.

Here’s how it works: Each couple meets first together as a couple and then each separately with your EFT therapist, April.  Then you’ll spend most of all of your sessions after that together as a couple.

April Lau, LMHC will help you to decrease your fighting, notice your feelings and your urges, feel safer asking for support from your partner.

You’ll learn how to have a more satisfying version of your relationship.

Ready to move from conflict, sadness, lonliness, and hurt to feeling love and connection? Contact Quality Counseling of New England LLC now to schedule a session.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is suitable for partners of every gender, gender expression and sexual orientation.  You don’t have to be married or engaged.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Increase self esteem and Decrease Depression & Anxiety

How does Cognitive Behavioral Therapy work?

You are a whole, valid person.  Our expert therapists use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you see yourself more clearly as often we see our flaws as bigger than they are and we make the mistake of downplaying our strengths.  Our CBT therapists help you to recognize your strengths even when depression, anxiety, low self esteem or trauma has made it hard to believe in yourself.  With changes in perspective and experimenting with new ways of doing things, you can quickly start feeling more capable and actually become more effective in moving towards your goals.

3 Keys to CBT

Recognize and Replace Unhealthy Thoughts

Through your work with an expert CBT therapist at Quality Counseling of New England, you will gain the ability to recognize and replace unhealthy thought patterns with thoughts that help you.  For instance, thinking everyone is more interesting than you or more socially skilled than you, might lead you to withdrawing or feeling down.  A more helpful perspective might be that you are learning to socialize and build relationships.  If you don’t have to be perfect, you can extend yourself grace and keep engaging with others while you figure out how to make friends.

CBT Helps You Decide What Actions Help, Hurt, or Keep You Stuck

You’ll learn how to figure out which behaviors help you (so you do those more) and what interferes with your goals (so you do those less).  Even figuring out what doesn’t really help or hurt you is crucial because you can decide to replace actions that have a neutral impact with actions that will have a positive impact.  You’ve probably noticed yourself doing something to manage your mood that becomes a go-to even thought it isn’t that helpful, like scrolling on social media to improve mood.  Your CBT expert will help you figure out when your coping skills are helpful and when other actions would be more effective in getting you to your goals.

CBT Gives You the Ability to Make More Effective Moves

Your CBT therapist will help you replace the ineffective thoughts and actions with useful steps towards your goals.  Instead of dealing with loneliness by telling yourself a story about not liking people (an unhelpful thought that leads to loneliness) or by avoiding rejection by never reaching towards others, you can reduce the loneliness by developing closeness with others.  Instead of using social media to compare yourself and deal with difficult feelings, you can identify what will actually work for you.

Our expert therapists therapists are ready to help with telehealth and in-person Providence therapists.  April Lau, LMHC is certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy via Boston University and Nadia McGovern, LMHC has extensive experience using CBT to help clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a kind of psychotherapy that teaches people how to identify and change destructive or unhealthy patterns of thinking, which may have a negative impact on their behaviors and emotions. CBT uses a combination of cognitive and behavior interventions that focus on maladaptive behavior patterns as well as emotional responses and thoughts. Moreover, it is designed to replace the maladaptive patterns with desirable behavior patterns.

Through collaboration between client and counselor, CBT involves both the identification of unhelpful thoughts and behaviors and discovery of more helpful approaches to managing mood, thoughts, and actions. Methods like cognitive restructuring, behavior experiments and homework assignments help patients acquire more helpful thinking and more effective ways to cope with real life stressors.

We use CBT to treat anxiety, low self esteem, trauma, and relationship impairments-all of our specialties. How CBT is implemented depends on the issue being address and is customized to each person’s individual needs. We use a culturally sensitive approach to honor each person’s intersectionalities. CBT can also be used for a variety of other issues we also treat including grief and depression. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can provide you with the tools and strategies you need to deal with your problems and achieve your target.

Contact us to book an intake appointment today. We’ll send you an email to our practice portal and once that’s done, we can set up a meeting with your therapist. At that intake appointment, you’ll get to explain more about what issues you want to address and what your goals are. Right from that very first session, your therapist will be using CBT to help guide their understanding of your concerns. They will develop a treatment plan with you and you’ll get started on progressing towards your goals.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is type of counseling focused on the ways human being connect we each other in relationships.  It uses decades of psychological research on attachment theory to help counselors guide clients.  EFT was originally developed with couples counseling as the focus and has expanded into individual and family therapy.  We use the couples counseling version which is also called Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT).

It is common to worry that your couples counselor might side with your partner and start telling you about all the ways you are responsible for making all the changes in your relationship.  We don’t see it that way.  We won’t take anyone’s side because we see it like this: You and you partner are a team and your opponent is the cycle you’ve been stuck in.  You’ll work with your counselor to break out of that cycle.  So it is you, your partner, and your therapist all on the same side.

Contact us to book an intake appointment today. We’ll send both you and your partner emails to log into our practice portal.  Then we’ll set up a meeting with where you and your partner can meet with your therapist. At that intake appointment, you’ll get to tell your therapist about what’s going on in your relationship and what you want to get out of couples counseling. Right from that very first session, your therapist will be using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help guide their understanding of your concerns. The next step will be meeting individually with the counselor (each partner for one session) and then returning to sessions with your therapist and partner.
